One of my favorite things about this particular story was Reacher’s interest in blues music. And judging by the number of Jack Reacher books on the top of the best seller lists, I’m not the only one. Yes, it’s very violent, and yes, it stretches credibility, but yes, it’s very entertaining. And it was just what I needed: a quick, fast-paced thriller that kept my attention the whole time. So I drove to our neighborhood used book store and picked up Killing Floor, the first Jack Reacher novel. I love my Kindle Oasis reader, but this summer I really needed the feel of pages beneath my fingers. At the time I also wanted the feel of a paperback book in my hand. I decided to start with the beginning of the series because, well, I’m kind of a linear person, and besides, I wanted to see his character develop just as Child wrote it. I wanted a quick diversionary read with lots of action, and Jack Reacher was just the sort of character I was craving. ![]() I enjoyed the book enough to want to read more, and this past summer was the perfect time. As you know if you’ve read any of the books, you don’t really need to read them in order. I jumped at the chance to pick it up, even though it wasn’t the first book in the series. This was in 2009, before Tom Cruise starred in the 2012 movie Jack Reacher.īut shortly after learning about the series, I noticed the seventh book, Persuader, free for Kindle readers. But eight years ago I bet a lot of other people had never heard of him, either. Eight years ago a friend of mine said Lee Child was the best selling author I had never heard of, and he was right–I had never heard of him. Long story short the coincidences of early Reacher and all following Reacher's is a result of Child running into a problem or a question then coming up with a solution to it and moving on. ![]() He wrote Reacher as super smart and super strong with no attachments to job or family as a result(and in an attempt to be different from the competition) which makes it hard to get him involved in plots. But if Reacher's personal space was violated he'd have no choice but to get involved.Ĭhild wrote Killing Floor when he had lost his job, had a wife and daughter, and was burning through his savings and probably burnt out from the toxic management he had fought and lost. Joe is in the story and dies because Reacher has no emotional investment in the murder otherwise and Child couldn't see why Reacher would stick around. It was only counterfeiting because a few months prior to writing he had read a book about the history of American counterfeiting. He didn't know Reacher's name until he came to the first interrogation scene, he didn't know what crime was being committed until closer to the end. Most of Killing Floor was written on the fly. Lee Child did a few pages of brainstorming about Reacher and the type of story and character he wanted to write then started writing. ![]()
